High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

At Arcadia Vale Public School, we believe every learner deserves the opportunity to shine. Our approach to High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is grounded in a deep commitment to equity, excellence and High Expectations Relationships. Ensuring that all students are known, valued and appropriately challenged.

We embed evidence-informed, highly differentiated and explicitly taught learning experiences into everyday classroom practice. Teaching teams use diagnostic and formative assessment to tailor learning pathways that build on each student’s strengths and aspirations, creating unmatched opportunities for growth.

Key Strategies That Support HPGE in Our Classrooms

  • Explicit and Differentiated Teaching
All students access high-quality instruction grounded in our signature Explicit Teaching model, with adjustments made to extend high potential learners. Instructional clarity, cognitive load awareness and scaffolded tasks that support both mastery and acceleration.
  • Targeted Extension and Challenge
We design tasks that extend thinking across the cognitive, creative, social-emotional and physical domains, with challenge embedded through open-ended questions, enrichment projects, student-led inquiry and leadership roles. These are supported by our HPGE identification matrix and dynamic student profiles.
  • Student Voice and Aspirational Goal Setting
Students co-design personal learning goals and engage in reflection and self-assessment. Our classrooms foster agency, encouraging learners to articulate their thinking, pursue passions and contribute meaningfully to school life. Including through our Ambassadors Program, interest-based clubs and leadership initiatives.
  • Instructional Leadership and Professional Learning
Staff engage in High Impact Professional Learning aligned with the HPGE Policy and AITSL Standards, building capability in differentiation, talent development and assessment for learning. Co-teaching, learning walks and feedback cycles ensure consistent, responsive practice.
  • Unmatched Opportunities for Engagement
AVPS students access an exceptional range of enrichment opportunities, from We Speak Together: Tiddalik’s Voice to public speaking, debating, sport, the arts and STEM. Our programs connect students with real-world audiences, peers and community, nurturing both excellence and belonging.
